Now, I never thought I would be writing a blog post about Taylor Swift… but I can’t help it, I just have to, I think I have a girl-crush. This woman has impressed me a lot. She is one of the few women in today’s music industry that is still a really great role model for young women. She is honest, hilarious and has her head screwed on! She writes her own songs, plays guitar and is also a very savvy business woman… This morning the world awoke to the news she has taken on the giant company Apple over their new streaming site Apple Music. She has managed to reverse their decision to not pay the artists royalties during the initial three-month trial. Because of her efforts, artists will now be paid (they haven’t said how much) for each time their song is streamed on the service. There is no doubt that Swift’s bank account potentially wouldn’t notice the increase in funds, but it could be the livelihood of hundreds of struggling artists and bands who are trying to make it.
‘This is about the new artist or band that has just released their first single and will not be paid for its success.
‘This is about the young songwriter who just got his or her first cut and thought that the royalties from that would get them out of debt.
‘This is about the producer who works tirelessly to innovate and create, just like the innovators and creators at Apple are pioneering in their field…but will not get paid for a quarter of a year’s worth of plays on his or her songs.’
Adding to all of this, her latest song Bad Blood is catching as hell. It’s the type of song I really don’t want to like, but I can’t help it. It gets stuck in your head.. also she’s made this epic film clip for it with an endless list of guest appearances, but the whole theme is women. Women being tough and taking ownership.
I personally don’t listen to commercial radio (or any radio at the moment for that matter) so I am lucky that I am not being submitted to listening to the same pop songs 10 times a day. For those that are, I can understand how a person could come to hate people like Swift. For now, I am in a position where when I hear her music, I can appreciate it for what it is. Catchy pop music that lets me Shake It Off. HA!
But seriously, I wish there were more artists out there like Swift, instead of the auto-tuned singers who prance around with no clothes on, singing about subjects that no 10 year old should be singing along to.. Perhaps the next generation would be more inclined to appreciate their education, have more self confidence and stop worrying so much about what other people think!!
Everyone should take a leaf out of Taylor’s book… stand up for what you believe in, be the best friend you can be and laugh at yourself, daily!
